Ethan Tu, 15, City of Mason Manta Ray has been chosen as one of 48 boys and girls from across the country to participate in USA Swimming’s National Diversity Select Camp in May at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
USA Swimming invites up to 56 athletes from diverse populations to participate in a three-day camp program which includes pool training, motivational and education sessions, and team-building activities. Selection is based on times achieved at USA Swimming sanctioned events.
Goals of the National Diversity Select Camp are to empower athletes from diverse backgrounds and diverse populations to:
• Demonstrate the viability of multicultural success in swimming
• Achieve performance excellence at every level of the sport
• Expound the benefits and value of participating in the sport of swimming
• Be positive leaders and role models that others from multicultural backgrounds can emulate
USA Swimming also invites the coach of each of the swimmers to the camp; therefore, the City of Mason plans to send Manta Ray coach Logan Schaefer to attend as well. Coaches attend a separate educational track while the USA Swimming staff and team of coaches work with the athletes. The Coaches track at the National Diversity Select Camp will include facilitations and presentations from top experts at USA Swimming, and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Topics include: USADA, Safe Sport, Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Mental Health for Athletes, Coach Wellness, technical facilitations, and season planning.
